I thought there were joining for science.

Wish it were true more then it appears to be.

Appearances can be deceiving.. My nephew handed me a blue plastic light saber, and picked up the red plastic light saber. I deflected his swings a few times, and then he pressed the red blade against the blue blade and I made a poor imitation of the crackling noise that is supposed to occur when the blades are in contact. The Irish Wolf hound in the house goes nuts and lunges at me for attacking my nephew, when in fact it's the little miscreant that's attacking and he's enjoying the activity.

Obviously not my favorite mutt since the attacks started; but he also freaks out and lets everyone know when diabetics in the house go into insulin shock. (His life has been saved due to his being an instant medical alert system..)

As for the credit system, here's hoping that the last few snags in the system get worked out, so we can get back to the fun of competitive crunching or reliable crunching - whichever of the two is the main justification for our person contributions here.

While using the new system to re-score back to Feb or earlier will reduce the scores of those that used an optimized client, it'll be reduced the same degree as any other user of the optimized client based on the amount of time the optimized client was used.

On the other hand, keep in mind the poor Linux folks who are being penalized under the standard boinc benchmark (compared to Windows); and some of the Intel P4s that are getting rather poor scores on the standard boinc benchmark when compared to AMD Athlon cpus.

So the change will help out lots of people that weren't using an AMD cpu on Windows.

At Distributed Folding - we had the scoring system changed; and the scores were frozen. It was possible through 3rd party and the system itself to see overall scores (the final score from score system #1, and the current results of score system #2) and compare them to others. Personally, I thought it would have been fine to have continued on from the old scores; rather than starting out SS#2 with zero points. The system allowed either view to work..

As for rescoring the WUs we've done back to Feb or earlier - it won't matter to me; but we should get feedback from the highly competitive teams on the top of the charts. To perform the work, and then show what the top 50 team scores would end up being using the new scoring technique would allow each team to vote whether they were willing to go with the current fair crediting system, or the old way.

I had a few of these as well. I feel certain they are bad Work Units.

I noticed a string of 5 of these missing Fasta file errors on my list, as well. Are some of the WUs taking advantage of features in Boinc 5.4.x that aren't in the Boinc 5.2.13 client?
6) Message boards : RALPH@home bug list : Bug reports for Ralph 5.13 (Message 1592)
Posted 11 May 2006 by BennyRop
Post:
When I managed to get Ralph 5.13 to be the only project in memory, my problem with slow response on right clicking on an .avi file and having the menu pop up in 6-15 seconds disappeared. It only took the 2 seconds (first time) and under 1 second the second time.

Which is good news.. however..

I ran Rosetta at 100% (1 project); and have the "leave the app in memory when pre-empted" setting checked. To get Ralph 5.13 to be the only app in memory, I had to suspend everything, reboot, and then unsuspend Ralph 5.13. With both apps unsuspended, they were both in memory. and the slow response problem returned.

When I switched Boinc to not "leave the app in memory when pre-empted" and ran the update I noticed the apps running for a few minutes, then switching, and when I looked back at them, they'd lost whatever cpu time they'd gained.. and moved on to a new WU.

"leave app in memory when pre-empted" is checked again.. the project is updated, and the cpu time continued to increase for whichever app was currently being run. The slow response problem is still here (at least for right clicking on .avi files), in spite of the fact that updating was supposed to allow us an update of the Boinc API - if I read the announcements on Rosetta properly last night. Before I could report my findings last night, I gave up, and opened up Cineplayer to play a dvd. (Cineplayer doesn't seem affected.. :) )

And if you have a machine that regularly has errors while running Rosetta, then switching that machine to Ralph will help track down bugs in the client, or encourage methods of identifying which machines can't handle certain types of work units. (i.e. Memory issues - when the WU requires more ram than the machine has).

Since we're all concentrating on the 1% bug; and the fact that Dr. Baker is helping create 5 more spots in the code to register the progress; I was wondering if you could update the progress bubble - especially for those of us running the client as a service. Would it be possible to add the following information to the percent done message: the current atom/building block we're working on (23 of 89) and the time since the last step was completed: (22 of 89 was finished 25 mins ago)

i.e. "2%" "Step 23 of 89" "25 mins on Step 23"

Which should make it easier to tell when we've run into the 1% bug - even if after the new code it is no longer being at 1% that the hangup is reported.

I noticed that TouchStone (which makes Checkit) has http://www.driveragent.com - and will list whether your windows device drivers are outdated..

Still looking. Anyone else find a trustworthy outfit that produces device driver version information that can be cut and pasted?

The Belarc advisor (now at 7.0t) creates a pretty good description of the hardware and software versions on a system; although it doesn't describe the device drivers being used. Sections of this would make cut and pasting info really easy.

So if we track down applications that will make gathering the static information (hardware and device driver versions) a matter of cut and paste (full manual mode); or automate it so it saves a copy of that information into the Ralph directory, would you modify Ralph to upload a few more files (if they exist) that have the system's specs?

And then we just need an app that goes off every 10-30 mins and records the apps in memory and their memory usage. (The task manager data..) and saves the last 2 states, plus the current one.

The information is no where near that detailed. Basically it is a single file that contains errors gathered from the work unit as it ran. If the level of reporting could be done that you suggest, it would speed the repair of bugs and problems, but it would also enrage many people as that level of reporting is quite intrusive. But the short of it is just the errors from the Workunit.

Microsoft gives you the option of sending information back to them after apps die - and let you read the information that they're sending back and let you choose whether to trust M$ with that information. So others have found a way of dealing with the issue.

Since Ralph has been geared toward those who have had repeated failures on Rosetta - I'm surprised you don't do much investigation into what about their systems is different than those of us with very few problems.

You're more than welcome to a snapshot of that information from my system; after you select the apps to generate the report - to help identify what's causing problems with other systems. It's just that I've had to fill out bug reports for various online games and have had to supply detailed descriptions of my hardware and device driver versions, and thus consider it normal for dealing with bugs.

Would any of those running Ralph be willing to voice their opinion on whether they'd volunteer this info to help track down these annoying bugs?

I saw mention of some data being sent back about the system when a problem occurs with Ralph. Does it include a list of what was running every 10 minutes, how much memory is free/being used by each process, HD space left, progress with the WU being run? (And sending the last few of these along with the error reports.)

For graphics problems, does it collect the name and model of the graphics card and the version of the video driver?

The version numbers of the rest of the hardware drivers? Motherboard model, ram timings, cpu temp.. (To help tell if it's hardware or software issues on the machine in question.)

And the setup of Boinc and Ralph/Rosetta.

If some of these need to be gathered from 3rd party software (Motherboard monitor, etc) you should be able to con most of us into running the programs and sending the information; or saving it to a file.
