I don't know which version the system has on it right now, but I am not getting work even when it is available. All I get when BOINC tries to get tasks is the following message -
"Wed Nov 5 09:04:19 2008|ralph@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 214616 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
Wed Nov 5 09:04:24 2008|ralph@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
Wed Nov 5 09:04:24 2008|ralph@home|Message from server: platform 'x86_64-apple-darwin' not found

Perhaps I should have added that this is an intel based Mac Pro quad system (8 processors) clocked at 3 GHtz with 5 GB of memory running MAC OS version 10.5.5, and BOINC 6.2.18.

Found these two running tonight when I got home. These are each roughly double my normal Mem usage showing 300+MB each on a dual CPU. One later dropped to 250MB which is still quite high.

I am not seeing this kind of memory use on the Mac Mine usually use about 20MB of real memory and about 169 MB virtual. If I turn on the graphic display, the virtual jumps up to a little over 200MB, and stays there until the WU I displayed is completed and then the system gets it back.

Version 5.12 Display.

On the Mac version you almost have it. Although the WU has not run long enough to get to the second model (where the problems usually start), all but the lowest lines are now showing. The lowest line displayed is the RMSD. All information below that is cut off (no project name or energy).

Thread on Rosetta indicates problems with 5.07 WUs ending due to disk space

Aborting result
JUMP_CLOSE_CHAINBREAK_ALLBARCODE_1q7sA_SAVE_ALL_OUT_472_6802_0: exceeded disk limit: 101466227.000000 > 100000000.000000

Aborting result JUMPTEST_CLOSECHAINBREAKS_1tul__469_2429_0: exceeded disk limit: 100308693.000000 > 100000000.000000

Yet both machines have plenty of disk space available. Is there some built-in limit of 100MB for a WU?? And how would a WU exceed that?

I'm thinking perhaps there are cases where the more frequent checkpointing can require more storage than expected perhaps?

usually it is the number of error messages growing the error file to an unreasonable size.

From a link off the RALPH Home page -

RALPH@home is the official alpha test project for Rosetta@home. New application versions, work units, and updates in general will be tested here before being used for production. The goal for RALPH@home is to improve Rosetta@home.

Please consider the following before deciding to join:

Since this project is a testing environment, applications and work units may be unstable at times.
Credits and other competitive statistics do not mean anything in this test project. Credits may be lost due to instabilities and may be reset at any time for testing.
There will not be a continual flow of work units. Work units will be issued only when necessary for testing.
We urge participants to not abort work units to help with testing.
Please set the resource share low for this project compared to other production projects in your RALPH@home preferences.

Emphisis added for clarity

I have only had a single 5.03 WU run through my Mac systems. Some of the 5.02(s)_ caused problems. Will there be another release of work units now that all my Macs are hungary so we can really test 5.03?

(sorry for the second post, Darned 1 hour edit limit)

Well my MAC G4 reported in this result for the only 5.03 WU I have had.

It looks very normal to me.

I do know the graphics were working (in fact they seemed faster somehow). I had no problems that I am aware of.

Is anyone out there running with a Mac? Are your jobs from 5.02 or 5.03 running?

We've tried to make the watchdog a little less aggressive about aborting, and are having it give
us back the reason for aborting. Let us know if
you think these jobs are getting killed too soon, or
too late. Thanks!

I am running on Macs. I have a G4 Dual that has a 5.03 job. And a G4 Laptop that was running 2, 5.01 jobs. One of the jobs on the Laptop hung at 1.4295% for 12 hours, I restarted BOINC and it Erred, but I cant get it to report (it is still stuck on my Tasks tab) I have a second on that machine that I aborted and it is stuck in the task tab too.

This may be a boinc thing. I had upgraded to boinc 5.4.4 per instructions from Rom for error checking. It looked ok but it is really not running right.

Anyway. the 5.03 WU on the G4 seems to be running fine. I changed the run time settings for it last night to 4 hours, and set the system to "remove apps from memory, to bang on it a while. It is at about 90% after 3:58 CPU time. I looked at the graphics last night and it seemed to be fine.

EDIT/UPDATE - The two WU stuck in my task tab finally reported

here is the one that was stuck for 12 hours.
here is the one I aborted manually.

Phil

Just got this one here.

This was on a MAC Dual G4 running MAC OS 10.4.6, BOINC 5.3.28

WU - NO_CHECK_7486h002_dec123_1.pdb_407_19_0

Looks like a file problem from this error message -

Well the WU completed, on it's own so it was not stuck. Strange that it stayed at 1.15% until it finished. The display never did count any steps and the graphs were not moving. Also the protein images were broken into many small parts and the movements were constantly the same.

Running version 5.01 now and it seems the model display is not working correctly and the WU may be stuck. It is running a "LOOPFARLX" WU the result has not reported yet but it is This one. It is at 1.15 % after an hour, and it is a very simple structure. From the picture in the display (the picture and the CPU time are all that is moving) it seems to be repeating the same movement over and over. It is showing model 1 step 0, and the step counter is not changing.

So while the Mac have been mostly free of trouble until now it looks like you may have found a way to break it.

This WU - here Hung at 75.24%. My time setting is 4 hours, and the current CPU time on the WU is 6:07:25. So it probably has been hung for about 3 hours. I will restart it and see if it finishes. If not I will abort it.

Before people perform an upgrade to their BOINC software, could you please provide some information as to the impact this may have on other projects they may be running. Many of the users are running multiple projects, and this kind of an upgrade could have serious implications for those other efforts.

In particular people running CPDN and Predictor may have some issues.

There are no implications I upgrade my BOINC client whenever ROM and the team bring out a new version, to help test if for bugs, in the many months I have been upgrading to various clients I have never had a trashed WU.

Besides if people wish to help RALPH solve the 1% bug they have no choice this is the only BOINC client that handles what RALPH needs for the error reporting

Actually there are implications for other some of the other projects. It depends on the platform a person is using and the project requirements. AS far as I can see the 1% problem is a Windoze problem. Those of us using Macs may not have to upgrade at all. Some of the projects cannot use the newest BOINC versions without upgrading their servers and or applications. This has been shown to be the case in the past. So while I am happy that this seems to work for you, I would for one would prefer to take guidance from Rom or David Kim on this point that is part of what they are here for.

Every ralph WU that has hit my system since the release of Mac version 4.86 has crashed. Up till now I had only seen one WU fail. The errors say that BOINC libray 5.2.27 was used to compile the application. Like this one here

I am running noinc 5.1.13 which is the current release version. Also some of the errors are for a missing file. Such as this one here

What ever is changed for version 4.86 on the Mac is clearly not working.
