Hello, I have a P3 450MHz system with 256MB of RAM running Fedora Core 5 (with latest updates as of the other week) and BOINC client 5.4.9. I have attached to the RALPH project. The client successfully attaches to the project, but in the logs, I get an error message saying "gethostbyname failed". It has been this way since Friday. I have detached and reattached to the project but no luck. I have also rebooted the system. To be sure it wasn't a configuration error, I attached to SETI and it has downloaded and is processing without any troubles. I would like to be able to run RALPH on this system since it is a little faster than my others. I have not been able to run RALPH on the other systems because the work units usually go over the deadline. |

Hello, What exactly did you enter for the project URL?? Can you select and copy the block of messages from your message log, so we can have a look? |

Since your scheduler request succeeded, it sounds like you do make it through to the project host ok, and your project URL is correct... is it possible it's having a problem retrieving your PC's host name? It's a Windows PC. From a command prompt, if you do NETSTAT, does it show your PC's host name in the "local address"? As you probably know, no work being available on Ralph is normal, so that in and of itself isn't a problem. They only release work when there are tests to be run. A note for future readers, your PC only has 128MB of memory. This is below the project's recommendation... and a good test for Ralph :) |

It's a Windows PC. From a command prompt, if you do NETSTAT, does it show your PC's host name in the "local address"? This is a Fedora Core 5 box. I did a "hostname" at the terminal prompt on the FC5 box and it returned the same hostname that is listed in the logs below. I have attached to RALPH on another FC4 and another FC5 I believe and it attached just fine. As I mentioned, (I do understand that SETI and RALPH are not the same thing), but I attached to SETI and it works fine. I also understand about there not being work all the time. I've been attached to the project for a while and noticed that. I also have 256MB of RAM according to POST/FC5. If you take a look at my PCs - this system isn't even listed in the computers that are running RALPH. I am suspecting their may be a configuration error with the system but yet successfully attaching/processing for SETI makes me wonder. =( |

G'day Tavis Just guessing here, but check both /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts to make sure your hostname is the same in both instances. Also I've noticed that sometimes the order of the localhost entry can cause problems I've found the best order is 127.0.0.1 "hostname" localhost |

G'day Tavis For some reason when I checked the /etc/hosts file it had no entries. I had not cleared this out at all and it had a hostname set in the Network config GUI. The only thing I had done in the Network GUI config was set a static IP for use with BOINCView. Then, I put in the line 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomin localhost (which is the exact line from another FC5 box that works fine) and rebooted the system. That still did not work. So, I went back to the Network config in Xwindows and changed the hostname completey from FC5-P3-450 to FC5-4, rebooted the system and looked in /etc/hosts and the "line 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomin FC5-4" shows up. I do have a decent understanding of Linux and some of its config files so I know what is going on in them, but not exactly what caused the problem. Now, RALPH seems to be working properly, although there currently seems to be no work units available. |
