The register page says that one can use the existing boinc account. But I can't attach to RALPH with my existing account and have to create a new one....

Not a bug - this is a different project than the Rosetta@home - you need to create a new account first.

I'm sorry but it is a bug if the registering page says you don't have to register new....

http://www.ralph.bakerlab.org/create_account_form.php

"NOTE: If you use BOINC version 5.2+ with the BOINC Manager, don't use this form. Just run BOINC, select Attach Project, and enter an email address and password."

That's missleading....

This is the new way of attaching to a project. You no longer have to go to each project website and create an account. It can be done via the BOINC manager since version 5.2 It eliminates the need for the cut and past of the account keys or sending them to you to only be blocked by your internet provider.

I know this because I'm doing some boinc projects right now. But for RALPH you have to register first and so the above sentence is missleading. Got me now?

Technically it is correct. As is the case with all BOINC projects you must create and ID and then attach. What they are trying to do is get people to use the new method, where the BOINC client will perform both functions. When you enter the e-mail and password in the BOINC client, if the ID does not exist it will create it and attach the computer. If the ID does exist it will simply attach the the existing ID. I would agree the wording may be confusing to some, but the idea is to get people to use the BOINC client attachment system.

And this exactly DOESN'T work... I tried to register one machine at RALPH with my existing boinc account and it doesn't work. I then tried to register with a new nick and e-mail and it doesn't work. So I registered at the Ralph homepage with a new nick and e-mail and then was able to attach one machine to Ralph....

I tried signing up with a new email and it didn't work. Eventually I manually created the account, and then I was able sign up with the (now existing) account.

If we look at the Boinc version numbers 5.2.6. We see the first number, in this case it's 5 (five). This first number is a "major version" number. The second number (two in this case) is the minor verion number. the last is the revision number.

When the Minor or second number is even then it's an approved/recommended release. When it's odd, then it's a developmental version number complete with bugs that we "boinc Alpha testers" are debugging. This doesn't apply to the project side software, but does apply to all client software (your boinc software).

Often third party optimizers grab the binary and run with it without the benefit of our debugging.

tony

PS boinc introduced the "attachment wizard" with the first major version 5 client.
